Banned tobacco products worth Rs 3 lakh seized in Tamil Nadu

VELLORE: Police seized banned tobacco products worth Rs 3 lakh that were being smuggled in a load carrier near Pallikonda toll gate in Vellore district of Tamil Nadu in the early hours of Wednesday.
A team from the Pallikonda police station, headed by sub-inspector C Ravi, was conducting vehicle check near the toll gate. They stopped a load carrier bearing a Karnataka registration number.The vehicle was driven by A Stephen, 31, of Pachal village near Tirupattur.
As Stephen gave contradictory answers, the team checked the vehicle and found around 50 boxes of banned tobacco products (Hans).
Stephen was booked under sections 273 (punishment for selling noxious food or drink), 328 (punishment for causing hurt means poison) and 511 (punishment for attempting to commit offences punishable with imprisonment for life or other imprisonment) of the IPC and Section 20 (1) of the Gutka and Pan Masala Prohibition Act .
